This bridge first opened in 1930 as the Lamar-McKinney Viaduct, a four-lane vehicular bridge connecting Continental Avenue in downtown Dallas to Singleton Avenue in West Dallas. In March 2012, the bridge became irrelevant with the opening of the Margaret Hill Bridge, which was wider and connected to the Woodall Rodgers Freeway. With the new bridge now connecting to Singleton, Continental ended with two sharp curves before a temporary stoplight.

The bridge closed to vehicular traffic permanently on July 8, 2013 for conversion into a pedestrian bridge/park as part of the Trinity River Corridor Project. The bridge reopened on June 15, 2014. Even though Continental Avenue now ends east of the bridge, the bridge is still called the Continental Avenue Bridge.
