This was the world's highest suspension bridge until 2003. The bridge hangs 1,053 feet (321 m) above the Arkansas River. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs under the bridge along the base of Royal Gorge. The bridge is 1,260 feet (384 m) long and 18 feet (5 m) wide, with a wooden walkway containing 1,292 planks. The bridge is suspended from towers that are 150 feet (46 m) in height. Passenger vehicle use of the bridge is permitted before the park's opening and after its closing on a daily basis.

    I visited here in the early 1970s. Camped nearby and was awakened by a screaming hoard of emergency vehicles racing up the hill to the bridge. When the GF and I reached the bridge we had to wait a long time to ride the scenic cable-way next to the bridge. The attraction operator had thought we were part of the team looking for a man who had jumped off the cliffs the last night. When he realized we were paying customers the 'car' was pulled back and we got our ride.
