The Walt Whitman bridge, named after the famed poet who made his home in Gloucester County toward the end of his life, is one of four Delaware River crossings that is owned and operated by the Delaware River Port Authority (the others being the Ben Franklin, Betsy Ross, and Commodore Barry Bridges). As such, it currently carries with it a $6.00 toll that is only charged to westbound commuters.

Construction began on the bridge in 1953 and it opened to traffic on May 16, 1957. Carrying Interstate 76, it connects Gloucester City, New Jersey with South Philadelphia. Due to its proximity, commuters use the bridge to access the Philadelphia sports complex and points south of central Philadelphia.
