Once a booming Gold Rush town founded in 1908 with 6,000 residents, Flat has declined as of 2006 to a single married couple as seasonal residents. Flat was never officially townsited and sits on mining claims, making its actual existence illegal, but an official U.S. Post Office served the few seasonal mining residents until it was closed in 2000.
There was once a light railway between Flat and the neighoring town of Iditarod, which is also abandoned. Flat was a stop on the original 1910-1911 Iditarod trail route.
