With the runup in coal prices in recent years, Pac-Rim Coal has moved along with the development of the Chuitna project, Stiles said. The mine will have an installed capacity of 3 to 12 Mt/a (3.3 million to 13 million st).
Coal will be hauled by a 1,830-mm- (72-in.-) wide 19-km- (12- mile-) long covered conveyor belt from the mine to Cape Class and the coal export terminal at North Foreland on Cook Inlet. Employee housing, mess and recreational facilities are also being built, along with a 1,525-m (5,000-ft) airstrip.
The North Foreland coal export terminal will cover 81 hm2 (200 acres). It will have 910 kt ( 1 million st) upland coal stockpile capacity and support infrastructure. A 915-m (3,000-ft) trestle will be built to the Cape Class draft for ocean-going vessels. Two 2.7- kt/h (3,000 stph) shiploaders will be built. And the terminal will have a 13.6-Mt/a (15-million stpy) throughput capacity.
