Šiauliai aerodrome started its activities before Second World War. It was built in 1935 and was used as the military base for the independent Lithuanian Air Force. After WW II, the Soviet Air Force took over Šiauliai airport, and built two parallel runways. After the re-establishment of Lithuanian independence, the aerodrome had to be reconstructed in order to meet civil requirements. So, it was decided to adapt the airport to international cargo and passenger transportation.
The owner and keeper of the airport is the Lithuanian army, and the priority of using the aerodrome goes to military flights. Currently, civil aircraft operations and ground handling services are organized by Municipal Company Šiauliu oro uostas, established in 2004. So, the airport serves as military and civil airport.
