BTA is the Russian acronym for Large Altazimuth Telescope.
Operated by the Russian Academy of Science.
Nominal aperture of the primary mirror is six meters.
First light was in 1975, and for the next 18 years this was the world's largest optical instrument.
Two much smaller telescopes are also in operation at the site, but the usefullness of this observatory has always been limited by atmospheric turbulence caused by strong high altittude winds.
Site is 6,797 feet above sea level.
