Historic retirement complex built to house senior veterans of the armed forces. The various buildings on the site were built between 1842 and 1951, and are listed as a group on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where they are designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District.

Extensive renovation and infrastructure improvements were carried out throughout the site in the 1930s by the Civil Works Administration (CWA) and the Works Progress Administration (WPA). These were both New Deal Programs that provided work for unemployed people who were struggling to find jobs during the Great Depression.
