Rottenrow Gardens (Glasgow)

United Kingdom / Scotland / Glasgow
 park, garden

Large garden and landscaped area built by the University of Strathclyde in 2003.

Former location of the Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital founded in 1834. A much loved Glaswegian institution - affectionately known simply as "The Rottenrow" by locals. But the building was falling apart by the 1970s, and was kept on life support for decades until the NHS could scrape the money together to build a new maternity unit onto GRI, which was built in 1998.

The Uni moved in with the bulldozers, and kept only the entrance porticos, and a few bits of basement wall to mark what was there originally.

The garden has been completed and includes water features and some pieces of modern art, which are intended to look like safety pins as a nod to the site's previous use as a maternity hospital.

Excellent sun bathing spot for that one week a year we get sun.
