Wilson who was a cooper (he made barrels for a living) and was a Chirst Church vestryman was the owner of the house.

The French Foreign Minister Talleyrand, under Louis XVI and later Napoleon, sought refuge in America, from the French 'reign of terror' in and most specifically at the Wilson House.
Another story is related to George Washington's visit to Oyster Bay on April 24, 1790, where it is said he addressed the children of Oyster Bay from the porch of the Wilson House. He slept at the Young's homestead on April 23 and left the Young's house in the morning to have breakfast at what is now George Washington Manor in Roslyn,
