Hyonmu Gate dates to the 6th century and was Pyongyang's northern gate. It was rebuilt in 1714, destroyed by U.S. bombing during the Korean War, and restored again in 1954. It takes its name from the mythical Hyonmu, the turtle-like guardian of the north in Korean mythology.
