1870 - former Charles Dutcher Smith / Nelson Beardsley Burr Estate. This large Italianate Empire Revival house with a cupola was considered a conspicuous landmark for many years until the trees surrounding it began to obscure it from view. Originally constructed of Centre Island brick in 1871 by Charles Dutcher Smith (great-great grandson of Thomas Smith of Centre Island) and Augusta Parish Ludlam Smith (great-great-great grandaughter of Joseph Ludlam of Centre Island) it was purchased by Nelson Beardsley Burr (First Mayor of Centre Island Village - 1926)and renamed "Lily Hill". The house is still extant and though the property was once subdivided into multiple 3 acre lots, new owners reconsolidated the lots and razed the modern structures on them. The home has been restored with great historical sympathy and again sits proudly on the hill with expansive views down its sweeping lawn to the bay. Contrary to recent local lore the home was constructed by a Brick Maker (as per the 1880 census record for Charles Dutcher Smith) and not a Ship's Captain.
