Three Acres sold by Emmeline Smith Fletcher to Edwin Gould, son of Jay Gould, the greatest railroad speculator of the 19th century. The Goulds' ownership was the only break in continuous ownership by the Smith family since 1741. Edwin Gould died in 1933, and his estate sold Upper Orchard back to the Smiths in 1937. Thurston Huntting Smith, stock broker, one time Mayor of Centre Island, and son of Herbert Ludlam Smith (Oliver's Point) purchased the home on 3 acres in May of 1937. Smith's wife was the former Ruth Mooney, daughter of the Atlantic Gulf & West Indies Steamship Company Board Chairman, Franklin D. Mooney. The Smith family resided here until the 1990's. They were the last residents of Centre Island to bear the Smith name. Both Thurston and Ruth Smith are buried in the Centre Island Ludlam Smith Cemetery.
