The temple of Baal (or Bel), the major God of the oasis, a god of the western semitic peoples since the 2nd millenium b.C., was built in the first and second century a.C.. Later used in islamic times as a fortress.

The cella of temple was destroyed on 30 August 2015 by Daesh/Islamic State of the Levant and Iraq, only the outer walls are still in place.
