(Airstrip of World War II Vintage now Being upgraded to Jagdalpur Airport to 2C category)
An airstrip of World War II vintage which now belongs to the DRDO was lit up by a convoy of 15-20 vehicles to ensure that the injured were shifted from Jagdalpur hospital to the IAF choppers and airlifted in the dead of night to the state capital for better treatment.
Basic requirements include provision of ATC (Air traffic Control), fire fighting services, terminal building for passengers' facilitation and security was still need up gradation. Officials said with the completion of the terminal building and the control tower, services is expected to start soon. They said they visited in connection with the proposal for upgrading Jagdalpur airport to 2C category, which would enable operations of 40-50 seats ATRs. Once a green signal by the team, processes to start commercial operations would be initiated. Officials said similarly, Ambikapur Airport would be upgraded to Category 2C and Bilaspur to 3C for operations of 60-70 seat ATR planes.
