This is the Proposed 2,500 acres of land near Madurantakam and is in talks with ministry of aviation to promote a second airport in the city.
The airport which is not more than 90 minutes away from the airport's catchment area. The location is well within the criteria. AAI and the International Civil Aviation Organisation will have to study the area and decide if an airport is feasible.
As the land was close to Vedanthangal bird sanctuary. "The study will decide whether birds will be a risk for flights."
Tamil Nadu government has almost given up on the greenfield airport proposal at Sriperumpudur and is scouting for an alternative location, as the land acquisition will be expensive in Sriperumbudur. AAI officials said it was up to the government to decide on developing the airport whether it should be fully private or under partnership with the private party.
AAI chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra said the second airport is a project that the state government should decide. A second airport would need at least 2,500 acres of land to have a scaled down facility with a single runway and terminals. More runway could be added to the airport depending on passenger and airlines demand. Since land acquisition is expensive, the state government wants to look at alternative sites. AAI will provide radar and other facilities as the state government finalises a location.
