This was once the deepest mine in the US, with workings 7900 feet deep. The silver mine closed in 1990 after producing over 40 million ounces of silver.

  • When the Star Morning mine shut down in 1982 we were mining silver ore on the 8,100 foot level and developing our next workiing level on the 8,300 foot level. Our main working shaft was the Noonday Shaft, which reached from its top at the 2,000 foot level to the 8,400 foot level. The top of the Noonday is actually 2 miles SE of the area you have marked as the 'Star-Morning Mine' on your map and was accessed by train. At the end of the 2 mile train ride you were already 2,000 feet below the surface of Grouse Mt. The marked area was the surface facilities and mill for the mine.
