city, county seat
City with a population of 30,904 at the 2000 census. County seat and largest city in Nez Perce County. Settled by Nez Perce people, the area first explored by whites when the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through what is now the city. Either named for Merriwether Lewis or Lewiston, Maine, the hometown of one of the members of the expedition. Settled during a gold rush, the city was founded and incorporated in 1861. In 1863 it became the capital of the new Idaho Territory. A new gold rush in southern Idaho changed the balance of the population and the capital was moved to Boise in 1864.
