Due to poor visibility, his descent went unnoticed by the United States Air Force F-106 jet fighters tracking the airliner. He was initally believed to have landed southeast of the town of Ariel by the edge of Lake Merwin, 30 miles north of Portland, Oregon. Later pilot information puts the jump location about 20 miles further west. This marker is at approximately that point.

  • a parachute has now been found that may have been his, this story http://www.thestar.com/News/World/article/350974 says the most likely landing spot was between green and bald mountains.
  • That says SW washington. Look at the map. It's marked in OREGON... Wrong spot!
  • You must look at the wind patterns and weather conditions first if you do that then you can get a more relative are that he could have possable landed remember look for the november 24 1971 weather conditions at around 5:30-6:50.I am doing research my self i will start to put my findings here i have so many new things to revile.
  • Dude-Man is correct. @ dawtcom: You're mistaken. The article says,"...it's DOUBTFUL other physical evidence exists except for MAYBE fingerprints OR a parachute." That is hardly what you claim: "a parachute has now been found that may be his". There has been one parachute found and it WASN'T his. There have been pieces of another parachute found, also proven to not be his. @chris griffin: The weather conditions at 5:30-6:30 are irrelevant since he jumped at 8:13. @Whoever placed the marker and wrote the description: "Later pilot information puts the jump about 20 miles furthur west." WRONG, the later information indicated that he actually landed 25 miles SOUTH-SOUTHEAST of lake Merwin in the Washougal River drainage, NOT WEST. Given that the only money found was located on the EAST bank of the Columbia River, 9 miles north of Vancouver Washington and about 15 miles SOUTH-SOUTHEAST of your alleged location, it is immpossible that the money got from where you indicate to where it was found. However, in that the Washougal River drains into the Columbia about 25 miles WEST, UPSTREAM of where the money was found, the current consensus is that he landed in the Washougal drainage about 35 miles SOUTHEAST of your marker. @chris griffen: Good luck with your research. It will be a looooong time before you complete the 90+ volumes the FBI has already compiled. Also, if you want to even apppear credible you need to learn to spell and compose, not that I'm perfect.
