After stealing some chickens from a nearby farm, Jesse James and the Younger Brothers gang crossed the Blue Earth river on a a rail bridge that was once at this location during their flight from Northfield. They followed the river and the railroad a couple more miles before camping for the night by the river in what is now Minneopa State Park's campground area.
While camped, they made the decision to split up, leaving the more seriously wounded members of the gang to travel at a slower pace. Jesse James traveled to South Dakota. The Younger brothers were cornered by a posse in a swamp between Madelia and La Salle.
