South Bend Township was founded in 1853, platted in 1854, and organized in 1858. The village of South Bend was incorporated in 1858, but the incorporation was discontinued. It had a station on the St. Paul and Sioux City Railroad, a grist mill, and a stone yard. Sometimes called South Bend City, its post office operated 1856-1900. By 1909 only the schoolhouse, the Welsh Congregational Church (removed to Pemberton in 1930), the Eckstrom general store, and a few homes remained.
