Cascade Locks and Canal (submerged) (Cascade Locks, Oregon)

USA / Oregon / Cascade Locks / Cascade Locks, Oregon
fishing area, lock (water navigation), interesting place, historic site, historic ruins

Site of the old locks on the Columbia. There were un-navigable rapids here before Bonneville Dam went in. Completed in 1898 and removed in 1930 because it was considered obsolete and unnecessary after construction of the dam. The eastern gate was flooded but is still in place and can be seen as the circular outline in the satellite picture (or from the park, island or bridge with polarized glasses). The "stairways to nowhere" on either end of the bridge go to the now submerged concrete walls. The western lock is above water and its walls today are popular fishing piers, accessible via stairways on either end of the footbridge.
