Chitrakot Waterfalls

The Chitrakot Falls (Often confused with the name Chitrakoot which is for a town of mythological value at MP-UP border) is a waterfall located near Jagdalpur, in Bastar district in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh on the Indravati River. The height of the falls is about 29 metres (95 ft). The breadth of the waterfall varies, as the water level in the river goes down drastically during summer. However during a monsoon the river touches both the banks and is filled with silt. In contrast, during summer the water carries no silt and looks different. This is a contrast to Jog falls which has water that looks white even during monsoon.
The beauty of this fall is in seeing multiple rainbows that are formed when sun goes to west after noon.

  • Chitrakot, the gorgeous waterfall is on the river Indravati, situated at a distance of 38 Km. in the west of Jagdalpur. Height of this waterfall is approximately 100ft.The Chitrakot waterfalls can be called as the smaller form of the world famous Nayagra waterfalls. The rainbow colors of the falls attracts the tourists at the first sight itself. This is the prime atttaction for all tourists and worth seeing in rainly season, between July and October. These waterfalls are in a horse-shoe shape and often compared to the great Niagara.

  • We used to live at Jagadalpur during 1954-56. We had many trips to visit the Chitrakot falls in different seasons. We live now in Montreal, Canada. Comparison with Niagara fares well. They both are spectacular and have their own charm. The amount of water falling down is really mesmerising. Niagara is well developed as a tourist spot. In summer coloured lights are beamed at the falls against the darkness of the night. Chitrakot can be developed similarly. My memories are still fresh.

  • Hi Dilip ji, I m also a student of BASTAR high school. bastar is a good place to live in, but due to some Maoism it is being defamed like anything. Why don't you come and visit Bastar High school once again to motivate the students.
  • Hello Virendra. Thanks for the info. I remember my old school. I had great teachers which led the foundation of my future. Late Maharaja Bhanjadeo Kaketiya used to visit and talk to us during annual gathering. I hate to read all about Mao trouble and I hope it soon may fade away.
