The Reichstag building is the seat of the Federal Parliament (German: Bundestag). It is a reconstruction of the historic building that previously stood here until 1933. It was completed in 1999 after a reconstruction led by the architect Norman Foster.

This historic building was constructed between 1884-1894 to house the Reichstag, the original parliament of the German Empire. There are two terms: the older Reichstag and the newer term the Bundestag. In today's usage, the German term Reichstag or Reichstagsgebäude (Reichstag building) refers to the building, while the term Bundestag refers to the institution. The term Reichstag, when used to connote a parliament, dates back to the Holy Roman Empire. The parliamentary body meeting in this building, the Reichstag or Imperial Diet -- first of the North German Confederation, then of the German Empire, afterwards the Weimar Republic.

The historic institution of the Reichstag Under Nazi Germany ceased to act as a true parliamentary assembly in the years of the Nazi regime (1933–1945). In 1933, the historic building was burned down in an act of arson. Hitler used the event as an excuse to revoke numerous basic democratic rights, paving the way to dictatorship. The building remained in ruins throughout the war, with the Reichstag meeting in the Kroll Opera House, across the Königsplatz. After the war, the building was restored and used as a municipal meeting space for the city of West Berlin.

  • Battle for the ReichstagAt 06:00 on 30 April the 150th Rifle Division had still not captured the upper floors of the Ministry of the Interior, but while the fighting was still going on the 150th launched an attack from there across the 400 metres of Königsplatz towards the Reichstag. For the Soviets, the Reichstag was the symbol of the Third Reich (ironically, never restored by the Nazis after the Reichstag fire) and one that they wanted to capture before the May Day parade in Moscow.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_in_Berlin
