Estate home designed c. 1927 by William Harmon Beers of the firm of Beers & Farley in the Georgian Revival style on originally 94 acres of land for George de Forest Lord, Sr {attorney, financier}. Lord served as partner of the law firm of Lord, Day & Lord, trustee of United States Trust Co., and director of National Surety Corp., National Surety Marine Insurance Co., and Seamen's Bank for Saving. In 1930, he comissioned landscaping by Ellen Biddle Shipman. His brother Franklin lived next door at "Cottsleigh".

By 1998, Lord's grandchildren were residing at the estate.

  • By the time of my father's acquaintance with one of Lord's sons, most of the acreage had been parceled for development. The home still stood, as did the caretaker's home. Ironically, decades later, I would learn that friends of mine were in fact renting the home, giving me yet another look inside and around the grounds. I'm glad to see that it's been well kept and only wish the acreage had been preserved.
