Hanningfield is now a nature reserve and the whole site is perfect for enjoying many leisure activities such as bird watching, fishing or simply a quiet walk in peaceful, scenic surroundings. The excellent Visitor Centre and reserve are operated by Essex Wildlife Trust.

Hanningfield Reservoir was built in the 1950s to supply water to the growing population of south Essex. When full, it holds 27 billion litres of water.

Hanningfield reservoir is set in a picturesque part of Essex and provides some of the best reservoir trout fishing to be found in the United Kingdom.

It’s a wonderful haven for nature, and is renowned for its nationally important populations of wildfowl, which can be viewed from the reservoirs four bird watching hides.

The Essex Wildlife Trust visitor centre is set within a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and in our shop you will find an extensive range of fishing tackle, clothing and gifts. Enjoy a meal or snack in the restaurant with fantastic views across the water.
