Through its long history, dating back to 1150, Niel has a rich past. Until the mid seventies was Niel economically very active. The decline of industrial activities was the beginning of the environmental restoration of abandoned clay pits. Many hikers and nature lovers visit the nature reserve. In the vicinity there are many fish ponds, which are highly regarded.
