Niel is a municipality of 527 hectares, bounded by the charming Rupel and houses 9.226 inhabitants. The municipality is almost 860 old.
Originally Niel, was a vacation place for the wealthy city dwellers who stayed during the summer period. The Castle in de Ridder Berthoutlaan still refers to that period.
When later clay was discovered in the area, Niel became a stone bakers municipality.
Later the textile industry was added to it.
