Ivan Vazov National Library (Plovdiv)

The library was created in 1879 as the book depository of the Directorate of National Education in Eastern Rumelia. Its first curator was the well-known Russian A. Bashmakov. Its fund was started with the books of Yuriy Venelin's library collection, owned by the Bulgarian Students' Society in Odessa, transferred to Bulgaria in 1876. In 1881, the Regional Assembly of Eastern Rumelia passed a Law on the Freedom of the Press, according to which every printed edition published in Plovdiv or elsewhere in Eastern Rumelia had to be submitted in two copies to the library. After the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia (1885), the Library developed and became the second national library in the country. Under the low on the mandatory depositing of printed publications of 1897 it was determined to receive and store everything published in Bulgaria. This obligation was also regulated under the latest government documents.
In 1974 the Library was moved to a new building which guarantees the necessary climatic and functional conditions for the work of this prestigious cultural institution in Plovdiv.
The library fund exceeds 1,500,000 library units.
The library maintains exchange with more than 20 libraries
from 11 countries on three continents.
The library owns a collection of manuscripts, rare and unique Bulgarian and European publications, church books, sketches, engravings and prints from the 19th century, a collection of portraits, archive materials and letters from the National Revival period.
