One of several Bahamian islands thought to be "San Salvador," the island where Columbus landed on 12 October 1492. Samana Cay had a permanent population for some time in the early 20th century (the ruins of this settlement are still visible), but today is uninhabited. The island is visited occasionally by natives of nearby Acklins Island for the collection of cascarilla bark, which grows abundantly on the island.

  • The National Geographic Society marks this island as the actual island of Columbus' first landing in the New World, and the geographical evidence tends to indicate that this is so.
