Acklins Island, part of the BAHAMAS, is a small island of approximately 389 square kilometers. The island was settled in the 1780's by American Loyalists who setup cotton plantations worked by slaves. After the abolition of slavery the populations dwindled. As next one tried the sponge fishing. Very soon a funghi destroyed the sponges. Today the island is mainly occupied by fisherman and small farmers. The population is just over 400.
