explosion site, Cold War 1947-1991, NRHP - National Register of Historic Places, notable by news, historical layer / disappeared object, ICBM launch facility
Former Titan II ICBM launch facility. This was the site of an infamous accident that resulted in an explosion inside the facility. Two airmen checking the pressure of the rocket's oxidizer tank accidentally dropped an 8-pound socket from the platform on which they were working, resulting in the socket piercing one of the rocket's fuel tanks, which allowed the gas inside to escape. The explosion occurred in the early morning hours of the following day, during stabilization attempts by a containment team. The explosion killed one airman and injured a further 21 people. The approximately 10-acre site is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), where it is part of the "Cold War Resources Associated with the 308th Strategic Missile Wing in Arkansas" Multiple Property Submission.
