This unit operates 36 RT-2PM Topol (NATO: SS-25 SICKLE) mobile ICBM launchers that are situated in 4 dispersed regimental garrisons around Irkutsk. The base was originally constructed in the mid 1980s to house Pioner (SS-20) IRBMs aimed at China. These missiles were banned under the Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty before any had deployed to Irkutsk. The first Topol regiment became operational on 27 May 1988.
