Home to the New York Mets MLB team from 1964-2008, William A. Shea Municipal Stadium was replaced by Citi Field in 2009. Originally built as a multi-purpose stadium, Shea was also the home of the New York Jets football team until 1983. The Mets inagural season (1962) and their second season were played in the Polo Grounds in Manhattan. It was originally to be called "Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium", the name of the public park on which it was built, but a movement was launched to name it in honor of Bill Shea, the man who brought National League baseball back to New York.
On August 15, 1965, The Beatles opened their 1965 North American tour at Shea Stadium to a record audience of 55,600. On 02/18/09, a demolition crew pulled down the final section of the structure.
