Site of New York City metropolitan area's first airport, earlier than Floyd Bennett Field. It was closed in the early 1980's after fears of planes possibly crashing into the nearby residential areas. In fact, prior to the airport's closure, a small plane crashed into a home nearby the airport. The airport today remains abandoned and partially flooded in some areas.
