The Boogie
1721 S Manchester Ave
Anaheim, CA 92802

The building itself was originally a large bowing alley, then briefly a supermarket in the early 1960's before becoming a nightclub called "Crescendo".
In the early 1970's it became a low-frills rock club called "The Warehouse".
In 1980 the release of the movie Urban Cowboy led to a Country music club trend, (ala "Gilley's"), and quick to capitalize on this was entrepreneur Jack Wade, (Jack Wade Productions), who infused large quantities of money into upgrading the facilities which included a cafe', four dance floors, a large stage, four bars and, a then state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. The "Cowboy", later The "Cowboy Boogie" was an instant hit for about 5 years. And was a concert venue for many Country music acts, as these were the days that the genre wasn't exactly selling-out arenas and stadiums.
The club name changed to "The Bandstand" in the mid-eighties and changed format to a Top-40 dance music based club, although Country/Western music played 2-3 nights per week.
The 1990's saw a turn to hip-hop music and a cultural change in patronage.
Violent patron confrontations and legal statue violations signaled the demise of what was the largest nightclub in Orange County.

"Road House" (1989) filming location:
At the beginning of Road House Dalton is working as head bouncer at Bandstand when he is recruited by Frank to be the cooler of his Missouri bar, the Double Deuce.

Bandstand also doubled as the interior of the bar / strip club where Sam Elliot's character Wade is working when Dalton calls him.

  • Was at a convention at the Anaheim convention center for about a week and went there every night. It was called the Cowboy Boogie Company in 1994. One of the dance instructors there was a guy name Freddy Falgout. It was all country and western dancing then and Friday, Saturday, and Wednesday nights were awesome with loads of people. Met th ehead waitress Donna and another one named Shannon and had nice times with them too. Its too bad it had to change then close. Nothing good lasts forever.

  • I was the entertainment director for the Crescendo and the Cowboy Boogie for awhile. Best damn crew in the business as far as I'm concerned. Jan was a trip as well. Heard Jack has diabetes and sight problems. Would love to see him one more time.
  • Memories!! Yea, in the 70's, myself (Ent Dir) and a gal named Olivia (Ofc Mgr) work there for, I think, Jerry. I remember, the Bass Speaker system use the entire area under the huge Stage as it Speaker/Horn. Also as the MC for the shows I would sometimes Open for some of the Acts ... I remember, sort of, lip-syncing a stand-up routine a few nights Opening for Bill Medley. I didn't know Bill was watching, from just inside the kitchen and Medley critiqued my first night which made the next nights better. Before the 80's, I also Promoted with a friend, Fred Cisneros, and MC'd News Years Eve at the Grand Hotel with Bill Medley. I lived in Hollywood at the time and stayed down a few nights a week by trading with the small motel just next door to the Crescendo. Aah, the convenience, if ya know what I mean. I may have stayed thru the name change to the Cowboy ... on second thought, Nah.
