"Charlton Hall" (Muttontown, New York)

USA / New York / Upper Brookville / Muttontown, New York
residence, LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast, Georgian (architecture), historic remains

Estate home designed in the Georgian Revival style by Horace Trumbauer 24 rooms, 14,000sf with 14 fireplaces c. 1916 for David Dows, Jr. {industrialist, financier, athlete}. Dows served as sheriff of Nassau County at one point. Trumbauer used a English house, "Groombridge Place", as the model for the estate which was originally on 97 acres with landscaping by Olmsted. The main stair rail was imported from the manor of the Duke of Cumberland, while the dining room was clad with what was said as an important set of antique Chinese wallpaper from 1715. Additionally, multiple mantels came from England.

It was subsequently owned by Wolcott Blair {financier}. Blair served as director of Merchants National Bank (founded by his grandfather) and was a member of the New York Stock Exchange. His son, Watson Keep Blair, inherited the estate thereafter.

The estate was profiled in "Town & Country" for Apr. 1931, pgs. 52-57 and then in Feb. 1948, pgs. 76-79.

  • Sad to see a beautifully designed place like Charlton or nearby Southwind marooned in a sea of ugly, wannabee houses.
