Wreck of USS Corry (DD-334)

USS Corry (DD-334) was a United States Navy Clemson-class destroyer launched and commissioned in 1921. In December 1929 Corry entered the San Diego Destroyer Base to prepare for decommissioning. She was towed to Mare Island Navy Yard and decommissioned 24 April 1930. She was stripped and sold for salvage 18 October 1930 in accordance with the terms of the London Treaty for the limitation of naval armament. After being partially dismantled at the Mare Island Navy Yard, ex-USS Corry's remains, consisting of most of her hull and a small portion of her superstructure, were sold.

The Corry's hull was purchased and hauled here around 1934 for use as a levee buttress for erosion control at Tule Ranch. The missing plates from the Corry's bow were cut out by workers from the nearby Basalt Rock Company shipyard during WWII.

The flush-decked destroyers were being decommissioned even during WWII, and the Corry is likely the last in existence.

  • Hopefully somebody will save her before it's too late. As long as she doesn't collapse. Would take money, lot's of money, but it could be done. She's the only surviving flush decked destroyer.
