residence, Tudor (architecture), LIGC - Long Island Gold Coast
Residence built c. 1927 in the Tudor Revival style by Wesley Sherwood Bessell for Leroy Latham {industrialist}. Latham served as founder and president of Latham Lithographing Co./Latham & Little Printing Co. and vice president of Acme Printing Ink Co. Latham also served as a trustee of the VIllage of Plandome from 1920-22.
The home by Bessell was his only known Long Island country house commission. Sitting on a hill overlooking small pond that flows into Leeds Pond, it features hand-cut stone, shingle roofing, mullioned casement windows, exposed beams from old Long Island barns used in parts of the interior. Grounds included an enclosed formal garden, a terraced flower garden, and a rock garden.
The property had an entrance on Stonytown Road with a long curving drive up to the house until the land was sold off and subdivided for two homes in the 1950's, though the stone driveway stanchions remain. Pediatrician John P. Viscardi Jr. lived in the estate for over 40 years, moving out by 2008. Home was expanded in 2010 by Roger Coleman but still remains its integrity.
