The original name was Orlando Municipal Airport, hence it's designation as ORL.
Owned by the City of Orlando, operated by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.
The land and property were formally an Orange Grove that was donated by Dr. Phillips to the city for an airport.

During WWII, it was Orlando Army Air Base along with a large tract to the north including what is now the Fashion Square Mall and Baldwin Park. In 1946, control was turned back to the City, the land that is now the mall was disposed of as excess, but what is now Baldwin Park became the Orlando Air Force base until it was closed and transferred to the Navy in 1966.
