131-foot, 13-story Neo-Georgian residential building completed in 1928 as a hotel. Designed by Paul Hunter, it opened as the Allerton House hotel. It is clad in dark-red brick above a 2-story white-painted limestone base.
The west end of the north facade on 38th Street is separated from the rest by a narrow recessed bay filled by a fire escape. At the ground floor, this section has a plate-glass-and-metal storefront (the entrance to which is around the corner), and the 2nd floor has a triple-window with dark-red metal framing and fluted Ionic pillars separating the windows; there are also curved iron railings across the window bases. To the east of the recessed bay are two wide round-arched bays, the first having a window, and the second the main entrance, with a glass-and-metal door and narrow sidelight, atop four stone steps, and covered by a rounded, green canvas canopy extending out over the sidewalk. At the east end are four narrower round-arched bays of windows with metal railings across the bases; the first bay's opening has been largely filled in, leaving a much smaller window than the other three. As the street slopes down to the east, basement windows appear, each taller than the last, with iron grilles. The base is capped by a broad stone band course.
The upper floors (and the east section of the 2nd floor) have seven bays of single-windows east of the recessed bay (with an extra bay of narrow bathroom windows between the western two), and two more single-windows bays at the west section. They all have simple stone sills, and air-conditioning vents are cut below the bathroom windows. All of the windows in the 3rd bay from the west have been shortened, including on the 2nd floor. A metal balcony is also attached to the west end bay at the 2nd floor. The 10th floor is topped by a cream-colored, modillioned stone cornice, with another cornice (without modillions) and brick parapet marking the 12th-floor roof line. A penthouse level is set back behind the main roof line.
The west facade on the avenue is split into two halves above the base, with darker brick on the north half. The ground floor has a storefront at the north half, and three tall single-windows with iron grilles at the south half. The 2nd floor has two triple-windows that match that seen at the west end of the 2nd floor on the north facade. The upper floors have three bays of single-windows at the south half, and one similar bay at the north half, with two bays of narrower windows to its right (although the southern one was originally the same size as the other single-windows but has since been narrowed but the east half bricked in. The south half of the facade sets back above the 10th-floor cornice.
The building contains 79 apartment units. The ground-floor storefront is occupied by Lucid Cafe, and a cleaners.
