A huge iron ore deposit (nearly a billion tonnes of ore) has been developed here by Consolidated Thompson Iron Mines Ltd. The mine opened in late 2009, initially producing 8 million tonnes per year of iron ore concentrate. Construction is already underway to double production to 16 million tonnes by 2013. Concentrate is hauled by rail to the Pointe-Noir terminal near Sept Iles.

Although there was a railway line nearby at the Mont Wright mine (Quebec Cartier Mining, now ArcelorMittal Canada), Consolidated Thompson instead built a 31-km rail spur that connected to the QNS&L Railway at Labrador City.

Cliffs Natural Resources acquired Consolidated Thompson in early 2011.
