Wabush Mine has capacity of 6 million tons of pellets annually.

Specular hematite is mined and concentrated at Wabush (formerly known as Scully) Mine, Labrador, Newfoundland. After the ore is mined and crushed, it is ground by autogenous mills and separated using both spiral concentrators and high-tension separators. The dry concentrate is shipped 275 miles in specially designed rail cars to the company's Pointe Noire, Quebec pelletizing plant.

At Pointe Noire, the concentrate is rolled into balls and fed to traveling grate furnaces for firing. Pellets are conveyed to dock storage bins or directly to shiploaders at Wabush’s deep-water port. In addition, Wabush is a supplier of manganese concentrates to the sinter market.

Wabush Mines was formerly a joint venture between Stelco, Inc. (now part of US Steel), Dofasco, Inc. (now a division of ArcelorMittal) and Cliffs Mining Company. After an ownership battle, Cliffs emerged with a 100% ownership of the operation.

  • Ownership of the mining company is in dispute at present. ArcelorMittal (which bought Dofasco) is trying to buy out the interests of US Steel Canada (which used to be Stelco) and Cliffs, but the latter companies are resisting. The issue is all tied up in the courts.
