Sangan has the largest iron ore mine in the Middle East. Sangan has the largest reserves of 63 percent iron ore, which is unique in the Middle East..
Sangan iron ore complex is located about 300 km south-east of Mashhad, 40 km southeast of Khaf, in Khorasan Razavi province near the Afghan border. The effects of digging pits and caves in different parts of the mine suggest iron ore extraction in distant times. The dates back to about 600 years ago. The exploration of Sangan iron ore mines began in 1960, and additional exploration activities have been ongoing since then.
