temple, archaeological site, ancient ruins

A complex of mostly mud brick structures located in the northern part of Amarna (ancient Akhetaten), along the road connecting the riverfront residential area and the Northern Tombs. The main foci of the complex were three large platforms arranged along a north/northeast to south/southwest axis. To the west lies a large rectangular enclosure and its component structures. The specific function of the complex remains unclear, although it has been suggested that it is either connected to the Northern Tombs or served as a "Sunshade of Re" temple belonging to one of the royal women, like the Sunshade temples of Nefertiti and Merytaten on the southern edges of the city.
