The archaeological site named from the nearby wadi al-Jarf includes the remains of an ancient Egyptian port that functioned almost exclusively during the reign of Khufu (c. 2500 BC) during Dynasty 4, and was perhaps briefly used at times during the reigns of his sons Djedefre and Khafre. The site is divided into six zones, including rock-cut galleries for storage (Zone 1), workmen's hilltop encampments (Zones 2-4), an intermediate building (Zone 5) and the harbor proper including storage and living quarters and a pier protecting the harbor (Zone 6). The site has been excavated systematically from 2011 by Gregory Marouard and Pierre Tallet.
