 office building  Add category

The middle building of the trio of very similar 151-foot, 12-story Neo-Classical office buildings completed in 1912. Designed by Frederick C. Zobel, they are clad in buff-colored brick above 3-story limestone bases with black iron and glass infill. Each of the buildings is slightly narrower than the one to its east.

135 West 29th (known as the Haymarket Building) has its base organized into a wide center bay and smaller end bays, with each of three 3-story openings having rounded corners at the top (3rd floor). The main entrance in the west bay has glass double-doors and transom, with a service entrance to the right. The slightly wider middle bay has a storefront with glass double-doors on the left. The west bay has a freight entrance with grey metal double-doors and another storefront entrance with metal-framed glass double-doors. The 2nd floor has triple-windows in the outer bays, and 4-pane windows in the middle bay, all with black metal framing and short upper transom panes. The 3rd floor has multi-pane industrial windows in each bay, also with black metal framing. The metal spandrels between the lower two floors have vertical ribs, while those between the 2nd & 3rd floors match those at the neighboring building to the east: rectangular panels with notched corners, and vertical scaled patterns separate each panel (these patterns being colored gold at this building). The base is highlighted by a carved stone shell and floral garland with ribbons at the top, in the center. Also differing from the neighboring building to the east is the rosettes carved at the top of each pier.

The upper floors have a middle bay of five windows and outer bays of triple-windows, all with black iron mullions. They have stone sills and lintels, and at the center of each bay there are fairly small, rectangular stone panels outlined with brick between the floors. The facade is dotted by protruding air-conditioning units. The piers have stone shields at the top of the 10th floor, with a band course with an egg-and-dart molding running across this floor. The spandrels between the top two floors have wide garlands, and elaborate capitals crown the piers at the roof line, which has a modillioned stone cornice with four finials at each bay, as well as a cartouche below the cornice at each bay. The ground floor is occupied by Five Star on 28 fashion accessories, and Neo Vu Inc.
