In the 1960's a freighter, named the Fury, ran aground on the point of Cape Gegogan during a hurricane. Local lore suggests this was no accident, but rather a calculated move on the part of the shipping company to divest themselves of an old ship that was no longer cost effective. The water is very shallow at the Cape, so no lives were lost and the cargo was easily salvaged. Due to the isolated nature of the Cape, the shipping company was allowed to leave the ship. It remains there today, a popular location for sea kayaking tours. A third of the ship is no longer visible.
