After the murder of Aleko Konstantinov, a committee to erect a monument of him was set up in his home town in 1897. Fund-raising campaign for its construction was launched. Citizens and institutions from both Svishtov, and from other towns took part in the donation campaign. A competition for creation of the bust-monument of Aleko was announced in 1910. Out of the seven models presented the commission selected the proposal of the sculptor Zheko Spiridonov. The monument was officially opened on 9 October 1911.
