These former evaporation ponds consist of a 100-acre oval-shaped basin separated into two areas, known as the North (larger) and South (smaller) ponds. The ponds were used by UNOCAL subsidiary Molycorp for disposal of wastewater generated by the company's mining and milling operations at Mountain Pass, San Bernardino County. The wastewater, containing heavy metals and radioactive materials, was transported 13 miles through a pipeline to the ponds, constructed in 1987.
